Немирівський район Вінницької області з 2000 року співпрацює з Корпусом Миру США в Україні.
Ця організація була заснована ще у 1992 році, коли президенти обох країн підписали двосторонню угоду про започаткування співпраці. Відтоді американські добровольці живуть і працюють пліч - о – пліч з українцями протягом двох років, обмінюючись досвідом та започатковуючи стосунки, які часто триватимуть усе життя. Добровольці допомагають учителям розширювати асортимент навчальних засобів для роботи в класі, а учням – набути навичок володіння мовами, які допоможуть їм досягти успіху як в подальшій освіті, так і в майбутній кар’єрі. Започаткувала цю важливу справу методист відділу освіти Інна Саган, яка нині проживає у США. Завдяки нашому співробітництву район здобув унікальну можливість мати носіїв мови, які надають допомогу не лише учням, але й учителям. Але про все це детальніше.
У 2000 році з метою підвищення рівня викладання англійської мови та активного залучення учнів до процесу навчання у район прибув на посаду методиста РМК волонтер Ерік Сандерс з міста Лос-Анджелес у штаті Каліфорнія. 19 – річний бакалавр одразу подружився з колективами учителів шкіл №1 та №2 міста Немирова, брав активну участь у житті громади. З його допомогою районний методкабінет отримав бібліотеку автентичної художньої літератури. Почали роботу клуби для обдарованих дітей та практичний семінар по розвитку навиків розмовної англійської мови для учителів. Звичайно, були труднощі у спілкуванні, проте спільними зусиллями ми їх подолали. Від’їжджаючи, Ерік повіз із собою не лише подарунки та сувеніри, але й найкращі побажання від учнів та громади району.
З нагоди святкування 10-ї річниці співробітництва Ерік Сандерс , нині волонтер у Кореї, надіслав нам своє привітання.
My time in Nemirov continues to be one of my most valuable experiences. The people in this beautiful town gave me nothing but kindness, generosity, and 2 years of treasured moments. I learned so much from everyone! I remember how much fun I had teaching all of Nemirov's remarkable students. I'm so happy that others have had the opportunity to enjoy all Nemirov has to offer!

У 2003 році до нас приїхав наступний волонтер - Колін Лардж із Альбукерке у штаті Нью – Мексіко. Чудовий методист, Колін зумів налагодити дієву методичну допомогу учителям шкіл району, допомогти їм подолати мовний бар’єр для спілкування. Він сам розповів про перші дні в Україні, коли потрапив у абсолютно нове мовне середовище з його незрозумілими правилами, і букви кирилиці літали перед його очима, а він не міг заснути. Така відвертість і доброта допомогли учителям повірити Коліну, а він став охоче ділитися з ними своєю викладацькою майстерністю.
Завдяки ініціативі добровольця ми налагодили співпрацю з американськими видавництвами Darien Book та Rotary Club of Parole в рамках міжнародної програми «Book for International Goodwill». Так районна бібліотека у Немирові отримала близько 300 автентичних художніх книг. Коліну також було комфортно у громаді, і він залишився ще на півроку з дозволу дирекції Корпусу Миру. За цей час він у співдружності з Ольгою Боднарчук написав пробний підручник граматики для учнів та їхніх батьків.
Робота методистом та учителем міських НВК №1 та №2 допомогла добровольцю визначити свій дальший шлях у житті. Він став викладачем літератури в місті Атланта штату Джорджія, а в даний час перебуває волонтером у Монголії разом з молодою дружиною. Ось його вітальний лист з нагоди свята.

I am pleased to send you these greetings on this tenth anniversary of cooperation with Peace Corps Ukraine. It has been a long time since I set foot in the Відділ Освити or the beautiful park, but the memories are still fresh in my mind. The two years that I spent living and working in Nemyriv were some of the best years of my life. During my time in Ukraine, I transitioned from a young adult who was uncertain about his skills, his future, and his path to a confident man. Although much of who I am was founded during my youth, my life in Ukraine taught me invaluable lessons about who I am. I feel very lucky to have had such a wonderful experience with my host institution and my town.
Whenever people ask me about my experiences in Peace Corps or about whether I would recommend the organization, I respond positively. I loved my time in Ukraine and felt very well supported and cared for by Peace Corps Ukraine. Being in Peace Corps helped me to discover who I wanted to be, and it also helped me establish my career. Of the four jobs that I have held in teaching since I finished my masters, my service as a Peace Corps Volunteer has played a role in getting three.
Each winter I begin to look at summer airline ticket prices going between whichever city I happen to live in at the time and Kyiv, and each winter I am disappointed that there are no low priced flights. I miss my host family in Гребінки and my friends in Немирів. One day I will bring my family to Ukraine and show them around the place that holds such a powerful place in my life. Until that time, I keep up with news in Ukraine, occasionally look at my pictures, and think of my experiences there.
Congratulations again on your 10th anniversary of cooperation. I wish you all the best of luck in the future.
До зустрічі, Colin Large
У 2006 році сталася цікава подія. Я зателефонувала регіональному менеджеру Наталії Пономарчук і поцікавилась, хто буде наступним волонтером- хлопець чи дівчина? «Хлопчик», - була відповідь. Звичайно, дівчатка стали робити зачіски, готуючись до зустрічі.
І хлопчик приїхав. Йому було тоді 65 років. Містер Джеймс Вілсон, професор Вермонтського університету, колишній викладач латинської мови та англійської літератури, любитель поезії. Новий волонтер навчив учнів складати вірші, перекладати поетичні твори. Далі продовжилась робота клубів для обдарованих дітей. Містер Вілсон ділився багатим досвідом своєї роботи на теоретичних та практичних семінарах для учителів .
На жаль, важка хвороба змусила Джеймса Вілсона перервати контракт з Корпусом Миру, але ми спілкуємось з ним, як і з усіма іншими волонтерами, у Facebook. До свята ми отримали відео з штату Вермонт, лейтмотивом якого є слова : «Земля кругла, це наш спільний дім, який усім треба берегти, і ми обов’язково зустрінемося».
І справді, вже три роки поспіль навесні Джеймс Вілсон приїжджає до Немирова, щоб зустрітися з учнями та колегами, які стали для нього друзями.
Так у 2008 році у відділі освіти зустрілися два волонтери. Новим добровольцем був Метью Мозінго з міста Арлінгтон у штаті Вірджінія. Скромний, надзвичайно культурний та вихований, Метт одразу завоював любов дітей та глибоку повагу учителів. Він завжди був поруч, умів ненав’язливо допомогти, підказати, був старшим братом для учнів і наставником для учителів. Саме йому ми завдячуємо перемогами учнів на районних та обласних олімпіадах. Метт навчив учнів грати у бейсбол та баскетбол, кататися на ковзанах. Співпраця допомогла Метту зробити свій вибір – він залишився на Україні, проживає у Києві і займається благодійністю в організації «Віфанія».
Колектив та учні Сокілецької ЗОШ І-ІІІ ступенів глибоко вдячні Метью Мозінго за допомогу в організації водопостачання школи. Адже село розташоване на природному гранітному щиті, і лише грант на 10 тисяч доларів США допоміг організувати бурові роботи і дати дітям артезіанську воду в рамках програми ”Water Sanitation”.
І Метт, і його рідні та друзі, і сім’ї інших волонтерів отримують гостинний прийом у наших сім’ях . Адже це так цікаво – спілкуватися з носіями інших культур.
Після переходу Метью Мозінго на іншу роботу ми вже не уявляли свого життя без волонтера – цієї живої енциклопедії. Тому знову звернулися з проханням щодо нового волонтера і одразу отримали відгук на своє прохання. До нас приїхав найкращий доброволець з 39-ї групи 23-річний Адам Т’ютор з штату Техас, автор двох книг, саксофоніст, надзвичайно приємна та комунікабельна людина. За неповний рік перебування в районі Адам навчив громаду проводити благодійні акції, учнів – старшокласників писати майстерні твори, започаткував випуск першої в районі молодіжної газети «Голос Молоді».
Філософ за складом розуму, Адам дав нам можливість по – новому подивитися на героїв, які залишають свою землю, від’їжджаючи в невідому країну, не знаючи навіть її назви, яка звучить приблизно так : одна із країн Центральної Європи.
A year and a half ago I was finishing my senior year at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, America, working alongside native Spanish speakers to try and understand the complexities of teaching foreign people the English language. My experiences there were valuable, but nothing that would prepare me for the challenges that awaited me in the “kitchen” of Ukraine. An American saying goes “If you can’t handle the heat, then get out of the kitchen”, which means if you aren’t ready for the challenge, then don’t face it. I was ready for the heat and I came armed with three key tools-Patience, Understanding, and Flexibility.
Intrinsically, the job of a teacher is a ready-made battle, and you are the soldier, who, without patience, faces mission impossible. Since arriving in Nemyriv, my host community of about 12,000 people, I have served one school in particular, while reaching out to many other establishments within our rayon. It is my experience with my school that has helped me realize the most patience, (it is the same when building a relationship with someone on a long-term basis, not just fanciful and free-wheeling adventures (like those I have in other villages), it can mean facing difficult situations. I approached the classroom at the beginning with a great energy, trying to be the fun guy in the class, sing songs, laugh and play. While this proved jolly and well for a while, I quickly realized that being a teacher doesn’t always mean being loved. This took a lot of patience from my end, both in realizing myself, and the reactionary emotions from those students who just seem to think that that SMS couldn’t possibly wait another five minutes. Patience to me is about self-control, about adapting to the environment around you, and never giving up. When the going gets tough, the tough get going.
Perseverance is what makes the warrior go back into battle when all looks grim, the sportsman to give 100 percent ‘til the final seconds, the hungry and broken remain faithful and strong; it is the difference between victory and defeat. It is no different for a teacher, and this ability to persevere has proved quite successful at my site. The greatest asset to perseverance is understanding, both of your own capabilities and actions and what they mean, as well as empathy built between you and your students. As a teacher of a language that is foreign to my students, and me being foreign myself, I have come into the classroom everyday knowing that what may appear simple to understand in my mind, may completely blow theirs. This has occurred to me most recently in some of the English clubs that I teach after school where different students from varying age groups come to practice their speaking skills and learn English in a fun, relaxed environment. As I instruct them they smile and nod and I ask questions that end in the word “Yes?” Such as “Clear, yes?”, or my more favorite “The clarity of the instructions is describable as lucid and accessible, yes?”, just to see if they will say “yes” even if they don’t know the answer. I have quickly come to realize the difference between the “yes” that actually means “yes” and the “yes” which means “Slow down Mr. American man, we have no clue what you just said”. This has all come about through the process of understanding one another and how we can help each other in the classroom. Students now are not as afraid to ask questions and tell me “no” when before they said “yes”. This is a great victory in the struggle for understanding.
As a jazz musician one of the things that makes me able to stand up and play is confidence, and in the jazz medium this means the ability to spontaneously adapt to situations and be ready at any moment to break out your horn and just start playing, or as we call it in the jazz world-improvising. It gives one the sense of freedom that you’ve always imagined flying would give you, while also remaining completely grounded as you naturally embrace and process the world around you- it is your inspiration, your Muse. As a teacher I am called upon almost always to do something at the last minute, to toss the lesson plans from the night before and talk about American slang or give a presentation on Texas to a group of 150 eager village students.
While I call it improvisation, you may call it flexibility and it has proved to be my most valuable tool. Life as a teacher is full of disruptions and unexpected moments and you have to be able to feel completely the environment you are in so that you may thrive in it, or else be swallowed by it. My colleague says “Adam, a woman from a nearby village just called and wants to know if you can come today to teach her first formers” or “Oksana is not well today, you must combine these two classes and fit your lesson to all of them”, and the list goes on. Every time I get these requests I immediately assess the situation and ask what is expected of me, what my audience actually desires, and what I am capable of giving them. Then I go forward and put on the best show I can.
It is important to have a plan in life, and as for teachers it is almost critical. Yet let this plan be but a blueprint that guides you, not that tells you exactly what to do, for otherwise you become restricted and stuffy, and that doesn’t feel good to you or your students. There is a great quote from a jazz musician which I use both on stage and off which says “Learn everything you can about your music, and then forget it as soon as you get on stage”. Everyone has their own “music” and they must be knowledgeable about it, understand it inside and out, but if you are too busy constantly thinking about the intricacies, closing your eyes to the beautiful impressions that can influence and teach you new things, you will never grow as a musician, and especially not as a teacher. For the best teacher is one who learns just as much from their students as they learn from them.
Результати співпраці з волонтерами говорять самі за себе: з 35 випускників 11 класів, яких по черзі навчали 4 волонтери, 17 учнів обрали ЗНО з англійської мови і склали його з добрими та відмінними оцінками.
Саме тому 10 річниця співробітництва НВК №1 міста Немирова з Корпусом Миру США в Україні стала великим святом, на яке запросили інших волонтерів, представників Корпусу Миру, учнів та батьків, учителів та громаду міста.
Свято розпочалося з виконання Державних Гімнів обох країн. Важливо те, що учні стояли при виконанні обох мелодій, висловлюючи повагу і до країни волонтера.
Присутні були вражені чудовим виступом директора школи Наталії Вікторівни Безп’ятчук, проголошеним англійською мовою. На сцену запросили регіонального менеджера Наталію Бикову, яка високо оцінила роботу приймаючої сторони. Хвилюючим моментом стало вручення короваїв гостям, коли на сцену вийшла мати двох учнів Оксана Більська і тепло подякувала присутнім. Далі лунали мелодії обох культур, а на банері юні художники з НВК №1 майстерно малювали емблему Корпусу Миру США.
Присутніх привітав начальник відділу освіти Михайло Ілліч Чорний і побажав дальшого плідного співробітництва. Грав на саксофоні Адам, виступали учителі з кафедри англійської мови у супроводі слайд – шоу про усіх волонтерів, з вітаннями на двох мовах зверталися до присутніх учні, представляли сценки, лунали вірші та пісні англійською мовою , навіть шкільний хор заспівав «Christmas Is the Time».
У цей день Адам Т’ютор отримав свою першу на Україні подяку за партнерську допомогу у справі навчання та виховання дітей. Його слова вдячності не залишили байдужою жодну людину в залі.
When I was a young boy, I dreamed of something wonderful called the “Love Store”, noticing that there were plenty of stores with food and other nourishing things, but no enough place full of love. Since that time, I have found Love Stores all over the world, from the shores of South Africa to the valleys amidst volcanoes in Guatemala. Yet the place I have invested the most time in away from my home country has proved to have many locations for this Love Store, and the biggest one is situated right here in heart of Nemyriv.
I remember my first day, slipping on the ice so new underneath my Texan feet, trodding carefully towards this place that would open me up for the next two years. Somehow I already knew I would be in good hands, I had met Olha just days before and something just felt so right. My intuition served me well.
You call her Olha Yevhenivna, you call her your colleague, some of you may even call her your friend. But I guarantee none of you call her “hoss”. It is a special American term for someone who knows how to take charge, while also following. Someone who gains respect through what she does, not by telling people what she is going to do. Someone who can accomplish whatever she wants, because she knows the power of confidence. Someone who makes you believe in yourself by the responsibility she puts into your hands without you even knowing, you smile as you realize she was beside you all along. But moreover, someone you can call colleague, friend, and “mama” all at the same time. Such is the essence of this woman.
My students. You are the reason I am here. I can hardly ever describe what it feels like to have hundreds of smiling face yelling out to you “Hello Mr. Adam” as I walk in the door, the love that fills me so full. You have surprised me in wonderful ways on numerous occasions, cherishing me on my birthday, toasting to American holidays and laughing as we dance to James Brown. At the end of the day, I come home to the greatest love of all, my family. Nina, Olha, Lyooda, Maxim, you have given me so much and I don’t ever know how to express how beautiful the love is that we share. I could not do every day what it is that I do, without being fully cared for and looked after on the home front. Thank you so much for loving me.
Ukraine. America.Two countries that have walked such different paths, have crossed at this point in their history, and look at what we have to show for it. We have the opportunity to work together in harmony for the betterment of our community. We have the chance to challenge one another in great ways than we could have imagined, sharing our cultures in ways that reveal the answers to the formula that no one has thought of yet, you just didn’t what you were looking for. Yet, most importantly, we have the duty to provide for our youth a better future, where apathy and ignorance are knocked down in the face of vigor and knowledge, static stoic manners give way to progressive expressive risks, deceit and distrust are replaced by honest and a belief in one another, and an overarching confidence that follows the words of the great martyr of America Robert Kennedy – “Some men see things as they are and ask ‘why’? I dream of things that never were and ask why not?” I dream of Love Stores all across this community. 10 more years? Hey, why not?
Немає нічого кращого за поєднання двох таких різних культур, кожна з яких від цього лише збагачується. Сприяння розвитку навичок лідерства, популяризація здорового способу життя, розвиток громадянської свідомості – що може бути кращого за ці благородні цілі?
Ми глибоко вдячні Корпусу Миру США за неоціненну допомогу, яку отримує район уже більше десяти років в справі сприяння розвитку особистостей з широким світоглядом та прогресивними поглядами.
Закінчується рік 2011, а співробітництво з Корпусом Миру триватиме далі. Завдяки співпраці з волонтерами я впевнилася, що все неможливе стає можливим, якщо правильно визначити шляхи реалізації своїх планів.
